“Thoughts on the Chicago Skyline”–Abby Talmadge

Staff Work

Industry set against lake view
A modern nightmare lingering
In the shame shadow of our elders
So strong, so empowered
With steel in their hearts
And future as bright as
Coal embers fueling railroad power.

This is where I come from.
My spirit pulls strength from here
As barge propellers draw force from water.
Let the environmentalists bellow crudely of my lineage.
For I/we have a place.
And we have reared this country upward.
